From Piano to Guitar: Hans Abrahamsen & Katalin Koltai
Hans Abrahamsen and Katalin Koltai present a new solo guitar work inspired by Abrahamsen’s October, originally composed only for the left hand. The new version uses the magnetic fretboard technology of the Ligeti Guitar invented by Koltai, which allows for the rapid transformation of the guitar’s open strings. This unique lecture-recital features both artists performing and discussing the creative process, and will be followed by a Q&A.

Academy String Orchestra
Magnus Johnston, Concert Master of the Royal Ballet and Opera, directs the Academy String Orchestra
comprised of first-year string students in a programme that opens with one of Elgar’s most popular compositions and culminates in Mahler’s transcription of Schubert’s feverish ‘Death and the Maiden’ quartet.

Boulez in Context: Challenging the Status Quo
Pianist Tamara Stefanovich counts Pierre Boulez among her most significant mentors. She now returns to the Academy to curate two performances marking the centenary of his birth through the lens of key solo and chamber works. The programmes will include Boulez’s Sonatine for flute and piano and Douze Notations, Messiaen’s Harawi (selected songs) and Thème et variations and Benjamin’s Three Miniatures for Solo Violin.
These concerts are part of a series of events at the Academy celebrating Boulez’s music, teachers, influences and legacy.
