PURCELL Fly, bold rebellion; Selections from King Arthur
MICHEL LAMBERT Airs à une, II, III et IV parties avec la basse-continue
MARC-ANTOINE CHARPENTIER Le reniement de St Pierre H 424

In the last decades of the 17th century, Purcell and Charpentier both wrote supremely dramatic music for small groups of singers. Whether they told stories of the delights of love or brought biblical dramas to life, they developed a sophisticated musical language to express the full range of human emotion that was influenced by their work in the theatres of Paris and London.
This concert includes Purcell’s ‘Fly Bold Rebellion’, an early ode welcoming King Charles back to his Court at Whitehall, and Charpentier’s The Denial of St Peter, one of the most poignant and expressive scenas of the period.
